After furious wife Joanne Mas cleared their bank account, Danny Dyer’s response wasn’t exactly what you’d expect.

The childhood sweethearts have been together on and off since 1992, having first met at school at the age of just 14. In the early days of their relationship, financial adviser Joanne, 47, was the breadwinner before Danny hit the big time with films such as Human Traffic (1999), Mean Machine (2001), and The Football Factory (2004) – securing a name for himself as a ‘hard man’ actor.

Despite their enormous professional success, the couple have navigated plenty of rocky moments during their at-times dramatic relationship – with Danny’s cheating proving to be a particular sticking point. In 2000, after discovering Danny, 46, had been unfaithful, scorned Joanne cleared their bank account and changed her number, in what was a particularly low point for the pair.

Ahead of tonight’s Channel 4 documentary Danny Dyer: How to be a Man, the Mirror takes a look at the former EastEnders star’s startlingly honest four-word reply…

During a 2023 interview with The Times, London-born Danny opened up candidly about the moment Joanne caught him out cheating, which resulted in her ‘changing her phone number and clearing their bank account’. She also stopped him from seeing their eldest daughter, Love Island winner Dani Dyer.

Rather than responding with anger in return, Danny completely understood where she was coming from. He told the publication: “I didn’t blame her,” he said. “It was a mad period. I do now realise what’s important to me is my family. They are everything.

“I tried to fill it with the drink and drugs and doing stupid things. I was a lost soul. I had a ‘f*** it’ button and I would destroy relationships before I could be left.”

Both moved on with other people, however, after Danny began visiting Dani again, old passions were soon rekindled. Embarking on an ‘affair’, the couple would ‘sneak around like schoolkids’ before ultimately deciding to give things another go for the sake of their young daughter.
