Apple suppliers slide on China anxiety, threat from Huawei

China’s widening curbs on iPhone use by government staff intensified a sell-off in global tech stocks on Friday on fears Apple and its suppliers could take a hit from rising Sino-U.S. tensions and growing competition from Huawei.

Apple shares have tumbled 6.4% over the last two days, wiping $190 billion from its market capitalisation, following news Beijing ordered some central government employees in recent weeks to stop using iPhones at work.

Several Wall Street analysts on Friday said the selloff was overdone, saying any revenue hit for Apple would likely be small due to the phone’s popularity in China. After two days of declines, Apple shares stabilized in early Friday trading, up 0.9%.

BofA sees ECB hiking all three policy rates by 25 bps next week

BofA Global Research said on Friday it expects the European Central Bank (ECB) to hike all three policy rates by 25 basis points at its Sept. 14 meeting, citing a weaker growth outlook and no clear evidence of a peak in core inflation.

The brokerage expects “very little” forward outlook for the following meetings but said the bias would be towards pausing and not cutting rates.

While convictions on the hike next week are “not strong”, in the absence of large surprises, if the ECB does not hike in September, “July would be the last hike of this cycle”, BofA Global Research wrote in a note.

Tech View: Nifty momentum indicators blinking buy. What traders should do on Monday

Nifty today ended 93 points higher to form a reasonable bull candle on the daily chart and a long bull candle on the weekly chart.

The short term trend of Nifty continues to be positive. “We expect Nifty to move into new all-time highs beyond the 20K mark in the coming week. The potential upside target of larger triangle upside breakout comes around 20100-20200 levels for the near term. Immediate support is placed at 19650 levels,” said Nagaraj Shetti of HDFC Securities.

Daily and hourly momentum indicators have a positive crossover which is a buy signal.

Global markets stumbled as they processed August’s jobless claims data from the US and the rise in gas prices due to strikes in Australia, rekindling further slowdown. The domestic market, however, showcased its resilience once more by rallying, seemingly unfazed by global distress signals. Although selling was seen in IT and pharma stocks due to weak global cues, the gains in infra, industrial, and capital goods stocks due to improved order inflows coupled with the persistent preference for mid- and small-cap stocks contributed to the ongoing rally.

– Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services

Benchmark Indices ended the week today just a few percentage away from record highs ahead of the G20 Summit buoyed by good support from the Bank Nifty ( on positive newsflow from the RBI) as well as the PSU & Infrastructure stocks. Despite a deficient monsoon the mood in the market was optimistic as PSU stocks across sectors exhibited positive investor appetite.

Morning view by Dr. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services

Sustained DII investment supported by strong retail buying is driving the market higher in spite of FII selling. In September,so far, FIIs have sold in the cash market for Rs 8608 crores and DIIs have bought for Rs 5715 crores. In spite of this net institutional selling Nifty is up by 434 points for the month so far.

This, and the hyper activity in the mid-and small-cap segments, point to the active participation of retail investors in the rally. Also, the ‘buy on dips’ strategy is working well for traders. This market construct has the potential to take the rally to near the Nifty record high of 19991. Frontline banking and IT stocks assisted by L&T and RIL have the potential to sustain the rally in the near-term. Bubble building up in segments of small-caps is an area of concern.
