India’s Ministry of Corporate Affairs has ordered an inspection of the accounts of Eros International Media, two government officials told Reuters, after the market regulator in June accused the media group of financial misreporting and fund diversion.

The ministry ordered the probe after it was “satisfied” that an inspection was required to check allegations of fund siphoning, one of the officials, who did not want to be named, told Reuters.

Eros International Media is a distributor and producer of movies and owns popular OTT streaming platform Eros Now.

India markets regulator to consider permitting delisting via fixed price

ndia’s markets regulator will consider permitting the delisting of companies via fixed price instead of the reverse book-building procedure, Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch said on Monday.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India will issue a discussion paper on the subject by December, the regulator said.

In the reverse book-building process to delist a company from stock exchanges, shareholders place offers for the price at which they are willing to sell securities back to the promoters, or large shareholders who can influence company policy.

As expectations are getting reset in sync with the first quarter earnings that are underway, we witnessed profit booking post earnings and news flows today in heavy weights as well as financials. Investors need to be mindful of cuts in stock prices if eventual outcomes on earnings fail to match up with expectations. The PSE Index however exhibited keen interest from participants as several of its constituents rose on the back of likely inclusion in the MSCI as well as new clean energy orders.

BASF India Q1 Results: Net profit falls 43% to Rs 113 crore on sluggish demand, high input costs

Chemicals maker BASF India on Monday reported a fall in its first-quarter profit, hurt by weak sales and higher input costs. The Indian arm of Germany’s BASF said its profit for the quarter ended June 30 fell nearly 43% to Rs 113 crore, while sale of products fell to Rs 3,343 crore from Rs 3,858 crore a year ago.
The company has reported a fall in profit for four quarters in a row, with a constant increase in cost of materials consumed.

Weakness in demand due to inventory destocking and China’s reopening has resulted in high channel inventory, and is likely to add to the pressure on chemical makers including BASF India in the first half of fiscal 2024, according to B&K Securities.

The large capex program undertaken by most chemical companies may act as a dampener to operating profit, adding to the strain on the balance sheet and offset the impact of lower input costs, according to analysts. Concerns of recession in European markets as well as the closure of TDI (toluene diisocyanate) plant also hurt sales.

Crypto Price Today: Bitcoin slips below $29,800; Tron, XRP decline up to 3%

The cryptocurrency markets were trading in the red on Monday as the FOMC interest rate decision looms over crypto markets this week.

Bitcoin (BTC) declined 0.42% to $29,793, whereas Ethereum (ETH) was below the 1,900 level. BTC volume in the last 24 hours stood at approximately $10 billion, rising 22.28% in the last 24 hours.

“Bitcoin continues to trade below the $30000 mark at around $29780. The price of Bitcoin did not rise about $30000 over the weekend. This recent price decline could be because of the US SEC chair expressing disappointment with the defeat over XRP’s case and increasing selling pressure,” Edul Patel, Co-founder and CEO at Mudrex, said.

“There could be little volatility this week as FOMC’s decision on interest-rate policy is due on Wednesday,” Edul added.

Market View | Dr. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services

The near-term market trend will be influenced by a host of factors like the recent Q1 results, some major results expected this week and policy decisions like the Fed meeting outcome on Wednesday.

Q1 results of RIL, though a tad disappointing on top and bottom line, are good when viewed from the perspective of the growth engines of the company – Jio Infocom and Reliance Retail – which are doing well and shows promise of improving, going forward. ICICI Bank has delivered the best results in the banking universe with 40% growth in net profit and impressive loan growth. Kotak Bank, too, has done well. But since the NIMs are likely to remain under pressure, no big spurt in earnings growth can be expected, in the coming quarters. So, while these stocks will remain strong and resilient, a sustained rally appears difficult.

The Fed is likely to raise rate by 25 bp on Wednesday, but the market movement will be decided by the commentary of the Fed chief regarding future inflation and rate trends. Investors may wait and watch these events unfold.

EARNINGS IMPACT | Realty major DLF’s consolidated net profit rose 12 per cent to Rs 527 crore in the first quarter of this fiscal. The company’s net profit stood at Rs 469.57 crore in the year-ago period.

09:24 AM

EARNINGS IMPACT | Private lender ICICI Bank on Saturday reported a 40 per cent rise in standalone net profit to Rs 9,648 crore for the June 2023 quarter, helped by a decline in bad loans and an improvement in interest income. The Mumbai-based private sector lender had posted a net profit of Rs 6,905 crore on a standalone basis in the year-ago period.

Though Friday saw a close below VWAP, we are inclined to attach more importance to how the 10D SMA stepped in to arrest the sharp falls. This encourages us to expect Nifty recouping all of Friday’s loss and aim for 20160. Alternatively, inability to float above 19770-840 region, or a direct fall past 19700 could be taken as signal towards more weakness, with first objective at 19460. An outright collapse is less expected though.

09:09 AM

Sensex Today: Pre-open session: Sensex down 50 points; Nifty below 19,750

After last Friday’s rout, markets may feel the pinch and extend fall in early trades Monday amid weakness in the Gift Nifty index. With US Nasdaq retreating further on Friday, technology stocks in the domestic market could mirror the trend, especially after the disappointing revenue guidance from Infosys last week. The RIL counter would be in focus today after the company’s GDRs plunged 6% in London trading post its Q1 results on Friday. Markets may witness sharp intraday sideways movement in next few sessions ahead of the US FOMC meeting outcome on Wednesday, as investors would be closely watching US Fed’s forward looking statement on interest rate movement for the rest of the year. On the technical front, hurdles for Nifty are now at 20000 mark on closing basis, while support is placed at 19561.
