Cost of living – latest: ULEZ cameras ripped down – and vigilantes backed by prominent Tory; major lender offers 40-year mortgage for first time ever | UK News

While the energy price cap continues to fall, it is still significantly higher than it was a couple of years ago, meaning some people could still be struggling to keep up with payments.

The team at MoneySavingExpert have some tips to help people if they find themselves stuck when trying to cover energy bills.

Speak to your supplier

It seems obvious but the first step should always be speak to your energy supplier and see if they have any support.

They may have plans available to help.

There are new rules that have to be followed before they force you onto pre-payment, which include vulnerability assessments and welfare checks.

If you’re already on pre-pay, suppliers have an obligation to help, including emergency credit.

Check if you qualify for additional support

You may be entitled to benefits such as Universal Credit, and get extra cash to help pay the bills.

If you’re a pensioner too, you may qualify for winter fuel allowance too.

Could you get grants to make your home more energy efficient?

If you’re a homeowner, you may be able to get grants to help pay for upgrades to your boiler or insulation.

MoneySavingExpert says people could save hundreds of pounds a year by correctly insulating their homes.

Use less energy

This might sound obvious, but bringing your bills down is good way to help save money.

There may be some appliances you don’t need to keep on all day, such as the heating and lights, and doing less laundry could also save you cash.
