Former Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro has asked the Supreme Court to help him stave off his jail sentence.

Navarro was found guilty of contempt of Congress for defying the January 6 select committee’s subpoena and must report to federal prison in Miami by Tuesday to serve four months in jail.

Judge Juan Merchan wrote on Friday, 15 March that the trial would be postponed by 30 days from the date of his letter, meaning it would begin in mid-April.

Former President Donald Trump is always in his least controllable state when unchained from his teleprompter — and Saturday afternoon’s rally in Dayton, Ohio was a prime example.

The event at the home of the Dayton Air Show was billed as an event to boost Bernie Moreno, a local car dealership mogul and business owner, to victory in the state’s quickly-approaching Senate primary on Tuesday. Mr Moreno, running his second campaign for Congress, is backed by Mr Trump’s endorsement for the first time and hopes that it will push him past his rivals in the Republican field.

It worked for Ronald Reagan when he asked Americans in 1980 whether they were better off now than they were four years ago. The simple question caught the public’s imagination and contributed to his win over President Jimmy Carter in that year’s election.

So, it’s understandable that Republicans want to recapture that magic going into the 2024 election.

There’s just one major, glaring problem — four years ago Donald Trump was president and the country was spiralling into the Covid-19 pandemic, with hospitals filling up, supermarket shelves emptying, and a desperate toilet paper shortage, while the stock market crashed.

Apparently RNC Chair Michael Whatley’s subconscious reminded him of this during an appearance on Fox News when he accidentally said: “At the end of the day, this comes down to a very simple contrast between President Trump and President Biden. Were you better off four years ago than you are today? The answer for this entire country is: No.”

Realising his mistake he made things worse by saying: “I mean, yes, we are better off today… or we will be…”

The Biden campaign then gave the segment a positive fact-check:

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has accepted the resignation of her outside prosecutor and former romantic partner who was hired to lead a sprawling criminal case against Donald Trump and his allies for their alleged scheme to overturn Georgia’s election results in 2020.

Nathan Wade’s notice arrived hours after Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee determined that Ms Willis and her office should step aside or Mr Wade should withdraw following several days of hearings on allegations that she financially benefited from his hiring.

His letter to Ms Willis and her reply underscored Mr Trump’s alleged efforts to overthrow 2020 results and the years of work among prosecutors to get the case to trial, after they spent weeks hearing salacious allegations from Mr Trump and his allies that prosecutors argue were designed to embarass them and distract from the case against the former president.

Fulton County district attorney Fani Willis will be allowed to continue to criminally prosecute Donald Trump and more than a dozen co-defendants who are accused of mounting a “criminal enterprise” to unlawfully overturn Georgia’s election results in 2020.

The judge overseeing that case has rejected efforts from Mr Trump and his allies to disqualify the district attorney following allegations of misconduct with a prosecutor she hired to lead the case.

In his 23-page decision on Friday, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee wrote the defendants “failed to meet their burden” in proving a “conflict of interest” that would require her removal, but he noted that any appearance of “impropriety” could necessitate Ms Willis or prosecutor Nathan Wade withdrawing for the case to move forward.

Hours later, Mr Wade announced his resignation.
