A young woman who has faced a ‘tough’ time during the current financial crisis says a host of food items can be bought for less than £10 to make 21 meals a week
Everybody wants their money to go the extra mile – especially when it comes to food.
A young woman has found a savvy way to make her money go further, spending just £10 for seven days’ worth of food at Aldi. Understandably, many people are cutting back and planning how to get more for their money as supermarket prices and household bills seem to be ever-increasing. Pair that with the recent recession news in Britain, and it’s clear to see why people are being more frugal.
One woman Eilish Stout-Cairns has admitted she has found it “tough” constantly worrying about money. In order to keep her food shop costs low the Newcastle-based woman has come up with a strategy to spend less on groceries while still enjoying three filling meals a day. She manages to make 21 meals over seven days and spends less than £10.
“I can get a week’s worth of food for less than £10, and still make satisfying meals that won’t leave me hungry,” she told the money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk.
Every day for breakfast Eilish has Cornflakes with milk. When she is trying to cut back, she will warm up a jacket potato with beans or have a ham, lettuce, and tomato sandwich for lunch. For her evening meal, Eilish makes sausages and mash, spaghetti and sauce, a sausage sandwich, or a cheese toastie.
Eilish said: “Aldi’s Everyday Essentials line is their budget range, and they do a pack of Spaghetti for 28p, as well as a Tomato and Herb Sauce for 47p. It’s a 500g pack of spaghetti as well, so can last a few dinners if you’re only cooking for one. For lunches, I tend to alternate between a sandwich or a jacket potato and spaghetti hoops. Both are real comfort meals and easy to do on a budget.”
Eilish’s weekly food shop includes:
- Everyday Essentials Medium Sliced Wholemeal Bread 800g, 45p
- Harvest Morn Cornflakes 500g, 75p
- Belmont Bourbon Creams, 39p
- Nature’s Pick Baking Potatoes 4 Pack, 70p x 2

It’s worth noting that Eilish doesn’t eat like this all the time. This is a great list to save for the odd week where you’re struggling and need to be savvy with your money until payday.”
