R. Kelly Sues The United States For Seizing Commissary Money

R. Kelly has issued a lawsuit against the United States.

According to reports, the singer is suing the U.S. for the seizing of his commissary funds, which were allegedly taken by the federal government as a way to settle a judgment against him. Court documents state, “The defendant is appealing his conviction and the government’s seizure of his substantial Bureau of Prisons commissary account to satisfy the financial penalties imposed in the case.”

This lawsuit comes after Heather Williams became the first victim of Kelly’s to successfully sue him. Her win included access to his music royalties after it was ruled in the Illinois Supreme Court. She is also set to her compensation, before the property management company, Midwest Commerical Funding receives their pay. The company also sued and won against Kelly for $3.5 million in unpaid rent at his Chicago studio.

In Williams’ lawsuit, she claimed that the convicted singer had repeated sexual contact with her since she was 16 years old. U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly ordered that Kelly’s label Universal Music Group, release more than $500,000 in royalties with another $28,000 that was solely for his commissary.

R. Kelly’s lawsuit is the latest in his legal issues while he serves out his 30-year prison sentence for several charges of sex trafficking and child pornography. Back in January, he revealed that he wasn’t aware that 5 women were awarded $10.5 million over threats he made to try to stop the screening of the docuseries “Surviving R. Kelly.” He said if he had known about the lawsuit, he would’ve fought it.
