Renowned money whizz Martin Lewis, also known as the Money Saving Expert, not only regularly appears on TV but is also a doting family man.

He’s married to TV presenter Lara Lewington and their daughter, Sapphire Susan Lewis or ‘Mini Money Saving Expert’, is the apple of their eyes. Lara has an impressive TV career herself, having been on both Channel 5 and ITV1 as a weather presenter and showbiz correspondent. She was a panellist on ITV1’s show Win, Lose or Draw and has featured on programmes like Newsnight, Big Brother’s Big Mouth and The Weakest Link among others.

Currently, Lara co-presents BBC’s Click programme and pens columns for a women’s magazine. Laura has sadly faced nasty troll comments suggesting she’s interested in Martin’s wealth and has dismissed such claims as groundless and disrespectful. In 2012, their happiness multiplied with the birth of their daughter, Sapphire.

Martin admitted to The Sunday Times in 2020: “When my daughter was born, I remember saying: ‘I’ll buy her everything she needs, but not everything she wants’. Unfortunately, I didn’t factor in her special power. Those eyes.” His devotion to his family is clear in his efforts to spend quality time with Sapphire. He ensures he’s back home by 6pm each day to relish precious family moments together.

Martin Lewis shared a proud dad moment on Twitter: “Mini MSE (age 7) said to me smiling tonight, having got some fruit from the fridge, ‘Daddy these grapes are a day over their best-before date, but I know I can eat them still because they’re not use buy, and they still look ok.’ I’m very proud. What a chip off the old block.”

But Martin’s own childhood was touched by tragedy when he lost his mum, Susan Lewis, in a sad accident just before he turned 12. He talked about this tough time on Radio 5 Live in March 2018, saying: “When I got home I was told… there had been an accident involving a lorry but no one told me how serious it was.”

“I remember worrying that my mum wouldn’t be there for my birthday. The next day my dad told me that she died that morning and that was the end of my childhood, that moment. I cried every day until I was 15 and then I stopped crying and became brittle.” He also spoke about his struggles with anxiety on BBC Four’s Desert Island Discs in 2020: “My mum was there one day and she wasn’t the next and that was it. This was 1984 and you didn’t have counselling.”

Martin is fighting through his deep sadness and worry, all to keep his daughter Sapphire safe from hurt. Speaking to the Daily Star, he said: “It was all very sudden. None of us expected it. It’s still something I don’t like talking about. It’s too painful to talk about. It affects me now. It affects me deeply. It affects me in my day-to-day life.”
