Manchester United ended the season on a high with FA Cup success but Erik ten Hag’s team struggled in the Premier League, finishing the campaign down in eighth
Manchester United had a season of extreme highs and lows and they were awful in Europe and the Premier League, yet produced their best display under Erik ten Hag to beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
Ten Hag’s outsmarting of Pep Guardiola cannot mask their terrible form in the top flight and they recorded their worst-ever Premier League campaign. They were also dismal in the Champions League and endured their worst campaign as they won just one of their six group games.
But they upset the odds to defeat City in the Cup Final in a sign of this team’s potential. Here’s how they all rated across the campaign.
Andre Onana 7
Was United’s only ever present in the Premier League and recovered from a difficult start to do well.
Diogo Dalot 6
It was tough for him at times at full-back, but the Portuguese kept going and got his reward at Wembley.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6
Again he found it difficult to achieve any consistency, but played well in the FA Cup Final.
Luke Shaw 6
Injuries restricted him to just 15 appearances and he faces a race against time to make England’s Euro 2024 squad.
Harry Maguire 7
Deserves huge credit for refusing to give up when ten Hag tried to sell him to West Ham and stood up for United.
Victor Lindelof 5
His campaign was blighted by injury and the Swede missed 21 games for United.
Raphael Varane 5
The Frenchman promised more than he delivered and is leaving Old Trafford after three years.
Jonny Evans 6
Did well on his return to United, but the 36-year-old faces an anxious wait to see if he will be offered new terms.
Lisandro Martinez 6
Ten Hag sees the Argentinian as key to his defence and he missed most of the campaign through injury before he impressed in the FA Cup Final.
Casemiro 3
Was terrible as a makeshift centre-half and the Brazilian could leave this summer
Christian Eriksen 4
Time has caught up with the 32-year-old and he too could be moved on.
Amad Diallo 6
The Ivory Coast midfielder scored a memorable last-minute winner against Liverpool in the FA Cup.
Sofyan Amrabat 6
The Moroccan will return to Fiorentina now his loan spell is over, but produced his best display in the FA Cup Final.
Antony 1
Scored just three goals and the Brazilian again showed what a monumental waste of money he is at £82million.
Kobbie Mainoo 8
The 19-year-old burst onto the scene, scoring a memorable goal in the FA Cup Final, and is off to Euro 2024 with England.
Scott McTominay 7
Scored 10 goals and pulled United out of many a hole, although he also showed his limitations as a player.
Mason Mount 3
Injuries did not help, but United would righty have expected more than one goal for £55million.
Bruno Fernandes 9
He scored 15 goals from midfield and contributed 10 assists, including a lay-off for Kobbie Mainoo in the FA Cup Final to crown his fine season.
Alejandro Garnacho 8
The 19-year-old was another big find this season and weighed in with 10 goals, including his Premier League Goal of the Season with that overhead volley at Everton.
Marcus Rashford 3
Managed just eight goals after last seasons heroics and has deservedly missed out on Euro 2024 with England.
Anthony Martial 1
Scored just two goals in 19 appearances for United and no fan will mourn his exit this summer.
Rasmus Hojlund 7
The 21-year-old Dane kept going to finish with 16 goals and there is definitely a top striker in there.
