Mallett’s Mallet rebooted to give UK a pensions wake up call

TV presenter, broadcaster and childhood favourite, Timmy Mallett, is calling on the UK to ‘Pay Your Pension Some Attention’ with a reboot of his much loved gameshow. Enlisting the support of Mallett’s Mallet and Pinky Punky, Timmy Mallett, in his trademark style, takes contestants back to the 80s and 90s to capture the UK public’s attention so they don’t feel so “Bleugh” about their pensions.

Mallett asks them to take a nostalgic look back to yesterday and uncover their pensions so they can ensure their pots are maximised for their futures. Nearly all working people (eight in ten employees[1]) in the UK have a workplace pension, yet many say they don’t know how to find information about these savings.

The gameshow directs the public to Pensionattention.co.uk to find out how they can do ‘The Pensions Playback’ in three simple steps. It allows people to identify where they are on their pensions journey, and what they need to do next.

  1. Look back to yesterday – do you know where your pension is? You are likely to have more than one from your working life!
  2. Lean in to what you’ve got today – do you know how much you ​already have today? ​It’s your money from your hard work.​
  3. Move forward to your future – what are your dreams? Do you know what income you might need in retirement?

This never-seen-before nostalgic take on pensions comes as £26.6 billion[1] is currently sat in lost pensions across the UK. People aren’t tracking down forgotten pensions from previous jobs.

Timmy Mallett, Campaign Ambassador, says: “I suspect people in their thirties often think about their pension and feel they don’t need to engage, assuming it’s something to address as you approach stopping work. But trust me, careers aren’t linear, and you might wake up one morning and suddenly you’re 55 and you go, crikey, what happened there? It zips along. That’s why it’s so important to think back to those different jobs over the years and think about any pensions that may be associated. 

“Doing ‘The Pensions Playback’ and taking the simple steps to identify where you are on your pension journey will ultimately mean you’re setting yourself up as best as you can for the future.”

A spokesperson for the Pension Attention campaign added: “Nostalgia is an incredibly powerful emotion. By getting Timmy Mallett on board, we’re hoping to engage more people in their current, and past, pensions so they know how their money is building for the future and what they need to do to achieve their retirement goals. The Pensions Playback shows just how easy it can be to pay your pension some attention.” 

Timmy Mallett’s partnership with the Pension Attention campaign addresses the importance of people understanding their finances for their future and demonstrates how easy it is to manage their pensions. Finding those old pension statements, logging on and checking contact details are up to date is the first step. Then, the MoneyHelper is a great tool to learn about the basics.

The Pension Attention campaign is co-ordinated by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA), and funded by a large proportion of the pensions industry. It is working in partnership with Pensions Awareness Week and National Pension Tracing Day.
