Drake Maye turned down NIL money to return

The regular season didn’t end the way the North Carolina Tar Heels football program had hoped it would with losses to Georgia Tech and NC State and then an ACC title game loss to Clemson. But there were still some things to build on going into bowl season and next year.

The biggest one is quarterback Drake Maye.

The redshirt freshman had a monster first season as a starter and was even in the Heisman talk for a little bit. Maye made his decision to return to North Carolina for another year and he did so while turning down money from other schools.

During Monday’s press conference, head coach Mack Brown revealed that Maye turned down ‘a whole lot of money’ to stay at North Carolina as Ross Martin points out:

There were rumors swirling that teams would be offering big deals via NIL for Maye to transfer to their program. Brown didn’t reveal which teams offered him the money but hinted that it’s all the schools getting the top recruits. So you can probably narrow down your list a little bit if you’ve been paying attention to recruiting and NIL recently.

Maye returning was huge for UNC’s offense and now his love for the school is even bigger than we thought for him to turn down a lot of money to stay.
