Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the , and sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the , and sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the declined 0.22%, while the index fell 0.06%, and the index added 0.31%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:), which rose 2.11% or 3.99 points to trade at 193.42 at the close. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:) added 1.15% or 1.21 points to end at 106.27 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:) was up 1.05% or 0.40 points to 38.44 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:), which lost 3.47% or 5.28 points to trade at 146.78 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:) declined 2.21% or 7.71 points to end at 341.68 and Dow Inc (NYSE:) shed 1.82% or 0.95 points to 51.15.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were MarketAxess Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:) which rose 5.33% to 251.27, Discover Financial Services (NYSE:) which was up 4.59% to settle at 99.09 and Alaska Air Group Inc (NYSE:) which gained 4.36% to close at 35.56.

The worst performers were Charter Communications Inc (NASDAQ:) which was down 8.70% to 364.40 in late trade, Caesars Entertainment Corporation (NASDAQ:) which lost 6.12% to settle at 43.41 and Albemarle Corp (NYSE:) which was down 5.61% to 113.25 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Chanson International Holding (NASDAQ:) which rose 64.14% to 4.76, Sphere 3D Corp (NASDAQ:) which was up 62.62% to settle at 1.74 and ZW Data Action Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:) which gained 52.86% to close at 1.07.

The worst performers were Bit Brother Ltd (NASDAQ:) which was down 51.73% to 0.03 in late trade, Replimune Group Inc (NASDAQ:) which lost 45.21% to settle at 6.75 and Onemednet Corp (NASDAQ:) which was down 42.97% to 1.87 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2037 to 869 and 81 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2356 fell and 1127 advanced, while 111 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.76% to 12.85.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.23% or 4.60 to $2,037.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 0.71% or 0.52 to hit $72.52 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.87% or 0.68 to trade at $77.35 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.37% to 1.08, while USD/JPY fell 0.01% to 147.18.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.26% at 103.92.
