First Lady Jill Biden, U.S. Sec. of Education visit Beta Technologies on Investing In America tour
First Lady Jill Biden made a pit stop at South Burlington’s Beta Technologies Wednesday morning.Vermont is her fourth stop on a short tour supporting the president’s “Investing in America” agenda, after Maine, Michigan and Colorado.Dr. Biden was joined by Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, Gov. Phil Scott, Sen. Peter Welch, Jane Sanders, Rep. Becca Balint and Mayor Miro Weinberger.They got an up-close and personal look at Beta’s electronic aircraft while chatting with current interns about their hands-on experience at the growing company.They also spent time with students and educators from the North Country Career Center, highlighting their work operating on electric cars. Vermont’s investments in green technology while promoting STEM and career and technical education, as well as the state’s free community college program, was applauded by Biden, Cardona and state leaders who want to see more of these programs implemented across the country.”With over $800 million in federal investments and 21,000 new jobs since President Biden took office, Vermont is rebuilding a stronger economy and an even stronger, more resilient workforce,” said Rep. Balint.”Governor, what you’re doing here in Vermont is raising the bar for economic development and pathways to career. (It’s) really setting a map of what other states should look to and say, ‘This is how you do it well,'” said Cardona.”Today is a reminder that we can and we should prioritize progress over politics, especially on issues where the majority of Americans agree,” said Gov. Scott.”What you are doing in this community is the future of our workforce and how we grow our economy from the bottom up and the middle out. These aren’t red ideas or blue ideas. They’re American ideas,” said Biden. The agenda is slated to grant $800 million to Vermont for new projects, including 47 new infrastructure projects. The agenda lays out plans to expand the U.S.-Canada border in Highgate Springs, help repair the Winooski Bridge and add a new terminal at Burlington International Airport.At Beta, the first lady learned more about the company’s advancement in electric aircraft manufacturing and its investments into STEM — science, technology, engineering, and math — and career technical education programs. The Investing in America agenda highlights the need for clean energy.
