Amazon to invest €700m in robotics, AI-powered tech in Europe


Amazon has shared plans to introduce 120 new pieces of automation technology across the European network in 2024.

Amazon claimed that by the end of 2024 its Innovation Lab, established in 2017, will have been responsible of the installation of more than 1,000 new robotics and AI-powered innovations throughout the European FC network, representing an investment of more than €700 million.

The e-commerce giant said these cutting-edge technologies include item sorters, pallet movers and automated guide vehicles, which all actively supporting Amazon employees in their roles.

According to Amazon, robotics and technology play a crucial role in enhancing its operations network, while AI enables it to scale these advancements for a global operation serving millions of customers worldwide.

Amazon stated that each of its technologies require a different skill-set which has reportedly led to the creation of new jobs. It also claims the technology has enhanced more than 50,000 jobs in FCs, by supporting employees in their roles, providing them with a “safer working environment and upskilling opportunities”.

Amazon believes AI-powered innovation was one of the factors that enabled it to deliver to Prime members at the “fastest speeds ever globally” in 2023, with more than seven billion units arriving the same or next day last year.

Stefano La Rovere, director for global robotics – mechatronics and sustainable packaging at Amazon, said: “At Amazon, our commitment to thinking big runs deep – over five years to the end of 2024, we will have invested over €700m in the deployment of more than 1,000 robotics systems across our European fulfilment centre network. In addition, the introduction of new technologies over the last ten years has enhanced 50,000 new jobs within our operations in Europe.”

La Rovere added that the lab is host to a diverse and international team of engineers and scientists dedicated to finding innovative ways to enhance everyday tasks for its employees, providing a safer workplace while consistently delivering for its customers.

Furthermore, Amazon shared that its Innovation Lab serves as a “training centre” for Amazon Robotics operators, as well as a testing ground ffor start-ups receiving funding and guidance through the Amazon Industrial Innovation fund.

Last year Amazon added radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology tags to its in-store clothing offering to create a seamless checkout-free shopping experience.
