The former president and Republican candidate for the White House, Donald Trump, said there were “bad people” responsible for his conviction, and called the judge in charge of the trial, Juan Merchan, “highly controversial”. “If they can do this to me, they can do this to anyone,” Trump said, addressing reporters from Trump Tower in Manhattan. “There has never been a more controversial judge,” Trump said. “I am now under a restraining order that no one has ever been subjected to – no presidential candidate has ever been subjected to a gag order before. I am under a gag order, a bad gag order, for which I have had to pay thousands of dollars in penalties and have been threatened with arrest,” he said, calling the trial “very unfair”. “As for the trial itself, it was very unfair. We were not allowed to use our election expert under any circumstances. You saw what happened to some witnesses who were on our side, they were literally crucified by this man,” he said, referring to Judge Merchan, adding that “he looks like an angel, but in reality he is a devil”.
Trump lashed out at his former lawyer and key witness in his criminal trial, Michael Cohen, but refrained from mentioning his name to avoid violating the restraining order against him. “He was a highly qualified lawyer,” Trump said at a news conference in New York. “I can’t name him now because of the ordinance. But you know, it’s a piece of shit. Everybody knows. It took me a while to find out, but it’s clear,” he said. “He got in trouble, not because of me,” he added.
Trump’s campaign made about $35 million after he was found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying corporate records for which he was indicted relating to payments sent to the porn actress Stormy Daniels, during the 2016 election campaign. “Within minutes of announcing the show trial verdict, our digital fundraising system was overwhelmed with support, and despite temporary online delays due to the amount of traffic, President Trump raised $34,8 million from small donors,” Trump’s two campaign managers said, Chris LaCivita e Susie Wiles, in a statement. The campaign said the fundraising total broke its previous record for donations raised in a single day. LaCivita said nearly 30 percent of donors following the verdict were new to the WinRed platform, used by Republican candidates for fundraising.
“President Trump and our campaign are immensely grateful for this outpouring of support from patriots across our country,” the two aides said. “President Trump is fighting to save our nation, and November 5 is the day Americans will deliver the true verdict,” they added. Yesterday, Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records, becoming the first former president to be convicted of a crime. The jury, made up of 12 people, delivered the verdict late yesterday afternoon in the USA (late evening in Italy), after a deliberation that lasted approximately 11 hours. The sentence will be announced on July 11th.
