UK Government funds 100MW electrolysis project in Ukraine

Hydrogen Ukraine and AB5 Consulting have won a grant to advance its H2U Renewable Hydrogen Project, located in Ukraine’s Odesa region.

It was secured through InnovateUkraine, funded by the UK International Development and hosted by British Embassy Kyiv. The hydrogen production project will have an initial electrolysis capacity of 100MW.

H2U will ensure a renewable hydrogen plant is constructed, dedicated to producing renewable electricity and green hydrogen for domestic needs and European export. H2 View understands solar and wind farms with capacities of 120MW and 80MW, respectively, will be developed too.

In addition to this, underground hydrogen storage facilities was be examined to ensure energy supply. A comprehensive feasibility study will be undertaken by UK-based AB5 Consulting and technical lead of Hydrogen Ukraine.

“We are thrilled to receive this grant, which underscores the significance of our project in driving innovation and sustainability within the Ukrainian energy sector,” explained Iaroslav Kryl, CEO of Hydrogen Ukraine.

“This funding will enable us to accelerate our efforts towards establishing green hydrogen production and storage capabilities, contributing not only to Ukraine’s, but Europe’s energy transition and fostering a cleaner, more resilient energy future.”

Despite Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the country has ambitious plans for its hydrogen future. Last year (2023), Maksym Timchenko, CEO of DTEK, said, “We all have to be prepared for the moment when war is over, and start thinking about this future now.

“In this context, we brought an initiative, ’30 by 2030’ – having 30GW of renewable capacity in our generation mix. It would be about half of our generation capacity in Ukraine, if we can bring it to light.

“Half of the 30GW would be exported to European countries, either through green hydrogen or electricity.”
