EU Commission to recommend opening Ukraine membership talks with caveats


Elections: Off-year elections will take place across the US, with results from Virginia and Kentucky pointing to which way the political winds are blowing for US president Joe Biden ahead of next year’s presidential election. Republicans are hoping to regain control of the Virginia state legislature, while Democrat Andy Beshear is up for re-election in a close race for the Kentucky governorship. 

Uber: The ride-hailing app is expected to post a 14 per cent boost in third-quarter revenue to $9.5bn as its delivery business grows, with investors on the lookout for commentary on future pricing moves.

Other earnings: KKR, Carlyle Group, DR Horton and Squarespace will report their latest quarterly earnings before Wall Street opens. Ebay, Fidelity, Robinhood, Rivian and Cava will report after the market closes.

Supreme Court: The US Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a gun control case that challenges the constitutionality of a federal law prohibiting those with domestic violence-related restraining orders from owning firearms.

Regulators: Securities and Exchange Commission chair Gary Gensler, Commodity Futures Trading Commission chair Rostin Behnam will speak at the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association’s annual meeting, as will deputy Treasury secretary Wally Adeyemo. 

Fedspeak: US Federal Reserve vice chair for supervision Michael Barr will participate in a discussion on financial technology in Washington. Separately, Fed governor Christopher Waller will speak about using economic data to understand the economy at the bank’s St Louis branch.
