Levelling Up cash has helped support 17 community projects in East Yorkshire.

East Riding Council said £495,000 has been awarded since 2022 from UK Shared Prosperity Funding and Rural England Prosperity Funding.

Grants of between £5,000 and £100,000 have been allocated to 17 projects in the region’s community and voluntary sector.

The council said organisations can still apply for funding for next year.

Groups that have benefited since 2022 include Sancton Village Hall.

It received £22,320 to extend the main hall and increased the size of the kitchen.

Rob Thomson, treasurer, said they hoped the work would enable them to hold more events and welcome more people.

“We hope the work will be completed in time for a fabulous Festival of Christmas, giving people a chance to sing Carols, meet Santa and enjoy festive food.”

Withernsea Town Council was able to replace the roof of the open-air stage in the Valley Gardens with a grant of £28,000.

Town clerk Jayne Moxon said the space was underused before the work due to the venue not being waterproof.

“Although some events were held, they were restricted to the summer months, due to variable weather,” she said.

“The replacement of the stage roof has improved the appearance of the stage area and enabled wider projects to develop in this area and it to be used throughout the year.”

A range of other organisations received funding for projects including improvements to green spaces and community gardens, increased access to to community facilities and cultural venues.

East Riding Council’s leader Anne Handley said all those organisations were helping to “open doors to new opportunities” for residents.

“This truly reflects the council’s vision of an East Riding where everyone matters, as well as our commitment to empowering and supporting communities.”
