Dumfriesshire rallies to raise funds to help millions affected by Turkey-Syria Earthquake

Fundraising efforts have been under way across Dumfriesshire to help an estimated 17 million people in Turkey and Syria affected by the powerful earthquakes there.

Yesterday the DEC Scotland Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal announced it had raised more than £8 million in 10 days, as the UK total passed £90 million.

Money donated is funding aid now reaching millions of people in vulnerable communities in north-west Syria and Turkey.

More than 45,000 people are now known to have died with freezing conditions afflicting the millions injured or made homeless.

The tragedy has galvanised many people in the region to make a donation or to take up fundraising.

The Annan and District Rotary Club has donated £1,770 to ShelterBox towards its response to the Turkey and Syria earthquakes following collections at Caledonia Park retail centre in Gretna at the weekend, plus funds from their own charity account, and from online donations.

Dumfries Lions Club members have sent funding to enable Lions in Turkey to help individuals and communities

The cash will fund either three complete shelter-boxes or five tents through ShelterBox, which is an international disaster relief charity providing emergency aid to families around the world who have lost their homes to disaster or conflict.
