Delays in the development of a Gozo Museum have led to the loss of some €5 million in EU funds, Gozitan MP Chris Said has said.

The regional museum, which will be managed by Heritage Malta, is set to be housed in the former Ninu Cremona Boys’ Secondary School, thus preserving a modernist building dating back to the 1950s. A new wing is also being built, which will be dedicated to maritime history.

But delays in the project have led to the loss of no less than €5 million in EU funds, Said pointed out.

That is more than the money spent on the project so far – €3,767,915 according to Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri in his answer to a parliamentary question by Said.

The project’s projected total budget is €9 million.

In his answer to Said’s question, Camilleri said that the museum “would offer a path back to Gozo’s history and the rich heritage that this island holds.” He highlighted that the museum’s collection will include “objects that the public cannot enjoy until today.”

These objects will a painting by Mattia Preti – Daniel Interpreting Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream – which was acquired by the Gozo Ministry under minister Anton Refalo for close to €400,000.
