Basingstoke’s Santa on a Bike raises funds for Spotlight UK

Keith Longman, 55, also known as Santa on a Bike, was spreading the Christmas spirit throughout December to raise money for the good cause.

Keith had the idea of swapping Santa’s sleigh for a bike in 2022, after purchasing a large number of bubbles and soft toys in 2020 for a show, which was ultimately cancelled due to Covid-19.

Santa on a Bike, and indeed Keith, have raised a total of £1,306.16 for the charity, over double his original goal of £500.

The money raised for Basingstoke-based charity Spotlight UK, will go towards the charity’s work, such as running events and other free activities for children and young people with a disability or life-limiting condition as well as a range of other services.

Keith said: “I am absolutely blown away by the figure raised, and it drives me forward. 2023 was only the second year of me doing Basingstoke’s Santa on a Bike, it’s going to be a yearly thing.

“I would like to thank everyone, whether you booked Santa, or waved at me from the car window, it’s wonderful to see that festive spirit around Basingstoke and the smiles on people’s faces.

“A massive thanks, everyone’s donation is so well received and it’s gonna help so many children in so many different ways.”

Keith said he plans to continue Santa on a Bike, going as far as to grow and dye a beard that could rival Mr Claus himself.

He is also the founder of Hampshire motorcycle group HBB, which runs events including organised rides, as well as fundraising for several charities.

A spokesperson for Spotlight UK said: “During the week of February 19 to 25, Spotlight UK is appealing for any companies, individuals or schools to help fundraise to make a difference in local children’s lives.

“In 2023 Spotlight funded trips for thousands of children to take part in free or highly subsided activities, including swimming, bowling, arcade and paddleboarding as well as taking 300 individuals to Chessington.

“The money Keith has raised will make a massive difference and will go towards this appeal.”
