Action needed – Endorsement for call to European Commission for geothermal strategy

Geothermal industry stakeholders are invited to endorse a letter by the EGEC calling on the European Commission for a geothermal strategy and action plan.

The European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC) is seeking the endorsement of industry players and stakeholders of a letter to the President of the European Commission and her team calling for a geothermal strategy and action plan.

Those who want to participate are encouraged to send the latest version of their logos to [email protected] to confirm their support before the 4th of June 2024. The letter will be sent on the 5th of June.

This letter aims to place geothermal on a stronger political footing than the last mandate. Demonstrating strong support from the industry and stakeholders (consumers, suppliers, etc)  will increase the likelihood that the Commission dedicates regulatory and financial time for geothermal.

EGEC seeks to achieve four outcomes with this letter:

  1. Prepare a European geothermal strategy and action plan;
  2. Inclusion in the Mission Letter of Commissioners for energy and agriculture, regions and cohesion  (which is responsible for managing important EU funds), climate (which manages the Innovation Fund), research (which manages Horizon and LIFE funds) and environment;
  3. Indicate to governments that the geothermal sector is an important European and national stakeholder;
  4. Help your engagement with governments regarding funding, permitting, licenses and market development.

A similar letter was sent in 2021 which to the target to triple geothermal capacity by 2030. This was the basis for the European Parliament to issue its resolution on geothermal. It also enshrined EU permitting rules around geothermal and the ‘Green’ zones used for shallow geothermal permitting are now called Renewable Acceleration Areas. Guidance to governments on these will be issued later this week.
