EU leaders welcome Luxembourg’s new premier

European Union leaders welcomed Luxembourg’s newly sworn-in prime minister, Luc Frieden, on social media on Friday showing their support for his ability to navigate challenges facing both Luxembourg and the broader European community.

Frieden – a former justice, defence and finance minister under Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker – was vice chairman of Deutsche Bank in 2014, and then went on to become president of Banque Internationale à Luxembourg and later head of the Chamber of Commerce.

The Grand Duchy is a founding member of the European Union and has played a pivotal role in shaping the bloc’s policies and initiatives.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on X, formerly Twitter, congratulated Frieden, who will join the European Council as Luxembourg’s head of government. Council president Charles Michel also sent his regards to Frieden via the platform.

More EU congratulations came from Manfred Weber, who leads the European People’s Party’s group in the European Parliament. The CSV, Frieden’s party, is also a member of the EPP.

Frieden’s premiership also means a goodbye from Xavier Bettel as Luxembourg’s prime minister after ten years, although he will remain foreign minister in the new cabinet, which was sworn in on Friday.
