Commerzbank to double payouts to shareholders as profit soars


Events: The EU executive is set to present an assessment of progress made by Ukraine in its membership bid. TikTok faces a deadline to provide EU regulators with information on how it protects minors and the integrity of elections. Joseph Wu, Taiwan’s foreign minister, delivers a speech and joins a discussion panel on policy as he visits Tallinn, the Estonian capital.

Central banks: Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey, European Central Bank governing council member Gabriel Makhlouf, Bank of Ireland chief executive Myles O’Grady and Bank of Italy deputy governor Alessandra Perrazzelli are all due to speak at an Irish central bank conference, offering clues as to whether interest rates have plateaued or not. They will be joined by Aviva chief executive Amanda Blanc.

Economic indicators: The EU publishes eurozone retail sales figures, while inflation rate data is expected for Germany.

Corporate results: Updates are expected from aerospace giant Airbus, retail company Adidas, lenders Commerzbank and Crédit Agricole and UK retailer Marks & Spencer, among others. Markets will be closely watching for signs of strain — or benefit — on balance sheets due to the double whammy of inflation and interest rates.
