“These economies have the potential to foster job growth in research, innovation, and education while empowering consumers to make sustainable choices in their daily lives. Our aim in initiating this discussion is to inspire others to re-evaluate their current way of life, challenging assumptions and driving meaningful, enduring change.”
Vantage UK has launched a new episode in their video series “The Vantage View,” this time focusing on the circular economy and featuring Dr. Seeram Ramakrishna, a Professor and Director at the Centre for Nanotechnology and Sustainability, National University of Singapore.
Dr. Ramakrishna contrasts the traditional linear economy with the circular economy, highlighting the latter’s societal benefits. He discusses how the financial sector is increasingly adopting circular practices to diversify and reduce long-term risks. Additionally, the episode provides insights for retail investors on how to contribute to the circular economy.
The circular economy model, which focuses on resource efficiency and sustainability, represents a significant shift from traditional linear economic models. In a linear economy, the process typically follows a ‘take-make-dispose’ pattern, often leading to increased waste and environmental degradation. Conversely, the circular economy aims to redefine growth, focusing on positive society-wide benefits. It entails gradually decoupling economic activity from the consumption of finite resources and designing waste out of the system.
The concept is grounded in the principles of designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems. This approach not only has environmental benefits but also offers economic advantages. According to a report by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the circular economy could generate a net economic benefit of $1 trillion annually by 2025.
“Our aim in initiating this discussion is to inspire others”
Vantage’s exploration of the circular economy aligns with global trends in sustainability and responsible investing. It reflects a growing awareness in the financial sector of the need to support sustainable business practices and investment strategies.
The episode on the circular economy is available for viewing on “The Vantage View” series, supported by Bloomberg Media Studios. This series continues to shed light on crucial trends and topics reshaping the economic landscape.
David Shayer, CEO of Vantage UK, said: “The rise of the circular economy presents a sustainable shift from traditional business practices, aligning with Vantage’s progression towards ESG principles and bolstering our support for both UNHCR and the Vantage Foundation. Circular economies potentially lessen dependence on limited resources and mitigate supply chain vulnerabilities, leading to enhanced resource security.”
