Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour estimated to boost UK economy by GBP 1 billion

Taylor Swift’s worldwide Eras Tour will boost the UK economy by almost GBP 1 billion (SGD 1.3 billion) as fans splash the cash to see the US music star, Barclays bank estimated Wednesday, May 15.

A study entitled “Swiftonomics” said almost 1.2 million fans would each shell out about GBP 848 on tickets, travel, accommodation and merchandise to see the singer and songwriter perform in the UK over 15 summer dates.

This figure is 12 times the amount someone would spend on an average night out in the country, according to Barclays.

Why is Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour expected to be so successful in the UK?

This isn’t the first time that Taylor Swift and her record-breaking Eras Tour have been credited for boosting economies.

“When it comes to cultural icons like Taylor Swift — like we saw with Elvis and Beatlemania in the ’50s and ’60s — supporters have such a strong connection to the artist that the desire to spend becomes even more powerful,” said Peter Brooks, behavioural scientist at Barclays.

Swift is on the European leg of her tour — which began more than one year ago — with Paramore as the opening act for all the shows. The singer previously played to sold-out arenas across North and South America as well as Asia. Her Europe shows however, have been particularly special due to the incorporation of songs from her new album The Tortured Poets Department, a 31-track bonanza which she released on April 19. Anticipation ran high ahead of her first gig in Paris on May 9, with Swifties speculating that she’d introduce setlist changes, along with new costumes and staging.

She’s next slated to perform for three nights in Sweden from May 17. In the UK, Swift will take the Eras Tour to sporting arenas in Cardiff, Edinburgh, Liverpool and London from June 7 to 23 and August 15 to 20.

By the end of 2023, the tour became the first to sell more than USD 1 billion in tickets. The Eras Tour is on track to more than double the amount by the time it concludes at the end of this year — no surprises then, if it truly does boost the UK economy by the projected GBP 1 billion (or more).
