Silence on Brexit must end as US researchers say it has fed “lost” decade in UK

A new study concludes that Brexit and austerity have stifled economic growth and undermined social cohesion in the UK.

Researchers, from the University of California (UCLA) and the Hertie School in Berlin, have warned that the next government will face “several interlocking crises”, and that they must address “long-term scars” of Brexit and austerity.

Best for Britain polling shows that almost two-thirds now say that Brexit has created more problems than it has solved. Polling also shows that a majority – 53% – of all voters want the UK Government to seek a closer relationship with the EU, compared to just 14% who want a more distant relationship.

Best for Britain is campaigning for the 114 recommendations published by the cross party UK Trade and Business Commission last year which were informed by more than 80 hrs of live testimony featuring 234 witnesses and written evidence from more than 200 organisations.

Naomi Smith, Chief Executive of Best for Britain and founder of GetVoting.org said,

“Brexit may not have featured much in General Election debates, but the international consensus, supported by objective research and data, is that Brexit has been and continues to be a drag on the UK economy and British living standards.

“With most Brits wanting a closer relationship with the EU, we look forward to working with the next Government to deliver tangible, lasting improvements to the current, damaging Brexit deal.”
