EU Blue Deal: How to build a Water-Smart Economy for a water-resilient Europe?

In 2023, the European Economic and Social Committee released its call for an EU Blue Deal while Water Europe envisions a Water-Smart Society in which the value of water is recognised and realised to ensure water security, sustainability, and resilience.

The European Union is investing in promising and strategic sectors for the green transition which could be water intensive industries. A water strategy for industries could secure water for their activities and turn water as competitive asset for them contributing to European water-resiliency and strategic autonomy, thanks to adequate financial support and access to skilled workers.

This event explores integrating water into industrial strategies and showcases tools and good practices to build a water-smart economy in Europe. On this occasion, the CCMI will present the key messages of its recently adopted opinion on Industrial and technological approaches and best practices supporting a water-resilient society. The opinion, focused on industrial policy, puts forward concrete examples on how to implement the EU Blue Deal, a standalone strategic EU policy on water, which the EESC is calling for. We will also have the occasion to hear from representatives of different EU industries working with water-efficient solutions as well as from EU Council Presidencies.

Europe is at a crossroad and can transform water-related challenges into new opportunities for technological development, societal progress, new jobs, skills and competitiveness while respecting the environment and safeguarding water resources for the benefit of all.
