The Med’s cheapest holiday destination just got cheaper

Jon Graham, a Turkey-based British tour guide with Walks Worldwide, says: “Inflation will mean rising prices but it will probably take time to catch up with the runaway rates of a strong pound.

“Independent travellers will be able to find some great value, but will have to shop around. The price of a beer in Fethiye and Ölüdeniz can vary from 50–60 lira (£1.50 to £1.82) to as much as 120 (£3.63) or more, with meals having similar variations.”

The cost of accommodation will feel cheaper in Turkey, too. Of the 15,804 properties listed in Turkey on Booking.com for a one-week stay for two adults between July 15–22, around two-thirds (10,313) cost £120 per night or under.

In Spain, by way of comparison, 53 per cent of the listings cost £120 per night or cheaper. In the UK that number is 34 per cent, in France it is 57 percent and in Italy it is 56 per cent.

Where else is getting cheaper?

If you haven’t booked your summer holiday yet, you still have plenty of options. But if low costs on the ground is a priority, there are a number of destinations that are much cheaper than they were just 12 months ago.

Laura Plunkett, Head of Travel Money at the Post Office, said: “It will pay to be flexible when deciding on a holiday destination. The Egyptian pound, Turkish lira and South African rand have all been losing ground against sterling in recent months, while Latin American currencies like the Mexican peso and Costa Rican colon have been surging in value.

“Sterling is also continuing to rise and fall against the euro and is currently stronger than a year ago. We advise holidaymakers to watch daily exchange rate movements before booking and buy their holiday cash when they see sterling move up against the currency for their chosen destination.”
