Insurance apps – What you need to know – Forbes Advisor UK

Most businesses offer their customers an app these days, and insurance companies are no exception, with apps available for products such as car insurance, home insurance, travel insurance and life cover.

Features range from 24/7/365 medical assistance on a travel insurance app to free health and fitness advice on an app for life insurance.

We’ve listed the apps available across our panel of insurers for travel, car, home and life policies. All can be downloaded from the Apple Store or Google Play.

Car insurance

Audi owners can download its app to make the most of its free Ensurance cover, which guarantees that their car will be repaired by an Audi-approved mechanic, no matter which car insurance provider they are with.

Users should notify Audi of their claim, resulting from an incident or their car being stolen, through the app, and Audi will liaise with the car insurer, any third parties and the mechanic on their behalf.

Where possible, it will provide a courtesy car while the vehicle is being repaired.

Audi will also pay for any repair costs that the insurer refuses to cover because the user has opted for an Audi-approved mechanic. Where legal proceedings are started on the user’s behalf, due to an accident, loss or damage to the vehicle or possessions and injury or death, Audi will cover the costs.

Cuvva uses its app to offer its flexible cover, which allows policyholders to drive their own car or someone else’s. Cover can last from one hour up to a month – on a rolling subscription, and can be cancelled at any time.

Using location tracking and motion data via the app – known as telematics – the insurer rewards policyholders with up to a third off their insurance if they drive well.

MyRAC app users can view their RAC policy documents and update their details in the app. The insurer says the app provides the fastest way for policyholders to notify them that their car has broken down. Once this has been done, it will send out one of its recovery experts to help.

The app also sends email reminders when an MOT or car service is due, includes a route planner feature, and the latest RAC driving news.

Users of Toyota’s car insurance app can view the journeys they have recently taken. Additionally, the app offers feedback on the user’s driving.

Home insurance

Hastings Direct is a provider of home insurance and various types of vehicle insurance. Its app allows users to access all their policy documents in one place.

Users can view details such as the renewal date and any outstanding payments. They can also talk directly to a customer service representative via the live chat service, and make claims.

Saga’s app is available to its home, car and health insurance policyholders, and those who have bought one of its annual travel policies. Those who have booked a cruise or holiday with Saga, have one of its financial products, such as an ISA or savings account, or are subscribed to its magazine, can also use the app.

Saga allows users to get quotes and purchase policies in the app. Users can also view their holiday bookings with the company and take advantage of offers on products and services such as gardening equipment and days out.

Travel insurance

CoverForYou’s TravelMate app keeps information to hand should something go wrong while the user is away.

In addition to holding the user’s policy details for easy reference, travellers can find local emergency contact numbers and access around-the-clock assistance, in the case of a medical crisis. There’s also a translation service that works offline as well as online.

Users can add cover, such as gadget insurance, to their policy, renew an annual policy or take out a new one. There’s also a claim form, which is automatically populated with the required details.

The app also links to CoverForYou’s Loyalty Club, which gives members access to deals on products and services such as cinema tickets, retail brands and pet care.

Outbacker and Cedar Tree, CoverForYou’s sister brands, offer similar TravelMate apps.

The HolidayExtras app allows users to purchase its travel insurance policies and find deals on hotels, parking and lounges at airports, as well as airport transfers and car hire.

The Post Office’s travel app enables users to view their policy, renew it, get quotes for new cover and purchase a new policy.

The app is also handy for travellers with a Post Office travel money card. The card provides an alternative to carrying cash or using a credit or debit card abroad, can be topped up through the app and added to Apple or Google wallets.

Other money-related services include converting funds between 22 currencies, and locating ATMs anywhere in the world and Post Offices across the UK.

The app also allows travellers to book services such as airport parking and hotels.

Life insurance

The Vitality app provides users with an overview of all their policies for life cover, health and car insurance.

Central to the app is its reward programme to incentivise policyholders to improve their overall wellbeing. Using smart technology, the app records how many steps a user has taken in a day, and allows them to earn more points when they are more active.

These points translate into weekly and monthly rewards such as money off a private health screen from wellness company Bluecrest, or a discount on a subscription with meditation app, Headspace. Users can track their progress as they go.

AIG Life policyholders can use a number of services to help them, their partner, and children under the age of 21 keep fit and healthy.

Online and telephone GP appointments are provided through the app 24/7, all year round, and prescriptions can also be issued via the app.

Users are able to access a team of sport coaches who can provide a tailored four or eight-week plan for losing weight or for generally keeping fit, based on answers given in a questionnaire in the app.

A team of nutritionists are also available to help improve the user’s diet, by offering meal ideas.

Users can continually access these services as and when they need, as well as have health checks carried out via questionnaires.
