Meta Rules Out Plans To Tackle AI Abuse In EU Elections


In a noteworthy gust of developments orbiting AI, Meta, a leading firm fostering AI-related services, recently ruled out plans to counter AI abuse in the run-up to the European Parliament elections in June. According to a report, the AI firm aims to set up a team to prevent disinformation and the abuse of generative artificial intelligence in the elections, as risks orbiting AI have recently been burgeoning.

With the rapidly evolving technology birthing speculations over regulatory inefficiencies globally, Meta’s announcement to empower a dedicated team to counter AI-related risks in European Parliament elections promptly gained significant traction. The European election looms over the global horizon, all set to take place on June 6-9. Meta’s decision to jack up the EU elections with its specially fostered team positions the tech giant as a pioneer in developing AI, while also addressing regulatory hurdles in its path.

Meta’s Head of EU Affairs Spotlights the Plan’s Blueprint

Marco Pancini, Meta’s head of EU affairs, recently stated that as the election looms, the firm plans to enable an Elections Operations Center aiming to weed out potential threats while also putting in place mitigations in real-time. Further, he proclaimed that the firm’s experts from numerous sectors, including data science, engineering, research, and operations, among many others, are poised to scope-in on tackling misinformation, influence operations, and counter the risks surrounding the abuse of generative AI.

Pancini also shed light on the addition of three new partners in Bulgaria, France, and Slovakia, adding up to the current 26 independent fact-checking organizations across the European Union that Meta collectively works with. With the weighing in of new partners and the firm’s plans to aid in the efficient conduction of EU elections, Meta positions itself as a considerable rival for firms like OpenAI and Google.

Collective Efforts To Tackle AI-related EU Election Hindrances

Intriguingly, Meta, along with other prominencies like Microsoft and Google, among many others, recently decided to work together, eyeing the eradication of AI-related threats in the upcoming European elections. A group of 20 tech organizations came together to zero in on developing advanced tools to detect misleading AI-curated content in the polls, per a report.
