Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is campaigning with Labor’s Aston by-election candidate Mary Doyle.
He said Doyle was not a newcomer – having run for the Aston seat before – and that his visit to the electorate was about sending a message that his government represented “every community regardless of where you are”.
Making an implied reference to Liberal candidate Roshena Campbell not having much history in the electorate of Aston, the PM said Doyle was not “someone who’s shopped around for a seat”.
“She is someone who wants to represent this area, someone who wants to represent this community and someone who would be an outstanding representative.”
Albanese, however, conceded that Doyle was not the favourite to win the byelection.
“No government has won a seat off the opposition for a century during a byelection. So the opposition, the Liberal Party, start as very strong favourites … but the truth is that the modern Liberal Party are too busy fighting each other to worry about fighting for the interests of the people of Aston.”
Doyle, who spoke before the PM, said she believed the Albanese government had “restored Australia’s presentation on the world stage, particularly with key trading partners like China, opening up opportunities for local businesses, strengthening the local and global economy, and bringing people together”.
The Aston byelection is on April 1.
