Speculation was mounting earlier this month that there might be a Bank Holiday if England won Euro 2024. People called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to give the country the Monday after the final off in England triumphed over Spain in Berlin.
As it happened, England lost that match 2-1, and it would have been virtually impossible to bring in a bank holiday at such short notice anyway. But now that is not happening, many people are asking when the next planned bank holiday is in England and Wales in 2024.
Typically there are only eight bank holidays a year in England and Wales. These are New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, the Early May Bank Holiday, The Spring Bank Holiday, the Summer Bank Holiday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

The New Year’s Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day bank holidays are moved to ‘substitute days’ during years when those dates fall on Saturdays or Sundays.
Elsewhere in the UK the rules are different. Scotland has a Bank Holiday for St Andrew’s Day and in Northern Ireland there are bank holidays for St Patrick’s Day and the Battle of the Boyne (Orangemen’s Day).
As it is now July, the next Bank Holiday in 2024 is the summer bank holiday. This takes place on Monday, August 25.
After that there are no more bank holidays until Christmas Day on December 25. This falls on a Thursday this year.
