A bank holiday for most people means extra time off work and school.
This year, the additional day of May 8 to celebrate the King’s coronation on May 6 took the bank holiday total for 2023 up to nine days. The UK’s last bank holiday was on Monday, May 29.
The next bank holiday is on Monday, August 28. There are two bank holidays over the Christmas period.

Your employer does not have to give you paid leave on bank or public holidays. Bank holidays may also affect how and when your benefits are paid.
If your payment date is on a weekend or a bank holiday you’ll usually be paid on the working day before. This may be different for tax credits and Child Benefit.
