USA, a former employee accuses a bank of having helped Iran and terrorists: “Washington ignored the evidence”
The British bank Standard Chartered allegedly helped “finance terrorist groups and Iranian entities under international sanctions”, and the US authorities allegedly ignored evidence of such activities. The broadcaster “CNBC” writes this, referring to the judicial documents relating to the deposition of Julian Knight, a former employee of the bank who agreed to cooperate with the investigation. The institute, which mainly serves clients in emerging markets, has already paid fines of $1,7 billion in the past, after admitting in 2012 and 2019 to having violated international sanctions imposed on Iran and other countries . However, the bank has always denied having managed the transactions of entities designated as terrorist organizations. According to Knight’s statements, the US authorities “lied”, denying having received concrete evidence of the bank’s illegal activities from the whistleblower. The man also asked a federal court in New York to reopen the case.
From 2009 to 2011, Julian Knight ran one of the bank’s financial services and transaction management units, and together with a second person provided internal documents to Washington authorities in 2012 and 2013. According to his statements , the papers contained concrete evidence of violations by Standard Chartered, even after 2007, the year in which the bank declared it had suspended all ties with entities based in Iran. Knight said the US government was responsible for a “colossal fraud,” having denied receiving “concrete evidence” that the bank had “facilitated the transfer of billions of dollars in financial transactions on behalf of Iran, international terrorists and companies associated with them.” The bank’s clients would include Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement, the Lebanese Shiite party Hezbollah and several pro-Iranian legal entities in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Germany.
