UN, EU express concern over Israeli settler attacks against Palestinians in West Bank

JERUSALEM, Friday, October 6, 2023 (WAFA) – The United Nations and the European Union expressed concern today in two separate statements over Israeli settler attacks against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, mainly in the town of Huwara, south of the northern West Bank city of Nablus.

“I condemn today’s attack by Israeli settlers against Palestinians and their property in the town of Huwara in occupied West Bank,” said UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, in a statement.

“I’m outraged by the continued incitement, provocations, and lack of accountability for these violent crimes,” he added, stressing that “Israel must ensure that the civilian population is protected, and perpetrators are held to account.”

Wennesland called “on leaders to work now to reduce tensions, hold perpetrators accountable and stop this senseless cycle of violence.”

The EU also expressed deep concern over the recent event in Huwara.

“Deeply concerned by the high level of violence in Huwara in the occupied Palestinian territories,” said the EU in a statement.

“Dozens of settlers rampaged through the city. A Palestinian was killed and dozens were injured.

Accountability and protection of civilians should be ensured,” it added.
