UK’s Banks Group offloads big battery project to West Burton Energy

The Banks Group, a UK family-owned property and energy business, on Monday said it has sold a 2.9-GWh battery storage project to power generator West Burton Energy.

The project, one of the largest battery developments globally, is located at part of the former Thorpe Marsh power station site near Doncaster in South Yorkshire. It will make use of the site’s grid capacity to support the renewables growth on the grid.

The Banks Group unveiled plans for the huge battery last year and after consultations with the local community, it submitted a planning application to Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council at the start of 2023.

The company said the sale is part of its evolving position in the renewable energy sector. Last week, Canadian investment firm Brookfield Asset Management agreed to acquire The Banks Group’s renewable energy division.

The buyer, West Burton Energy, is the operator of the West Burton power station and battery energy storage system in Nottinghamshire.

“West Burton Energy’s local knowledge, significant experience in the energy generation and storage sector and access to the capital required to take this nationally-significant project forward makes them the ideal owner,” said Richard Dunkley at The Banks Group.
