Millions of Brits will face an unwelcome onslaught of rain and thundery showers this week in the run up to the Early May Bank Holiday weekend.

While some Brits will embrace warmer weather today, conditions are looking less inviting in other parts of the country. The Met Office said the mixed outlook today will be typical for the rest of the week ahead. “This low [pressure] coming up from France is bringing with it some pretty warm air, some heavy downpours through Wednesday night – a couple of Met Office warnings in place – from the storm,” meteorologist Alex Deakin said..

“Intense rain, lots of flashes of lightning and spray and surface water on the roads across the south on Thursday morning.” While the North West of England, the Midlands and the South East will see highs of 21 and 20C, other parts of the UK will hover around the mid teens, particularly in northern and eastern Scotland.

While parts of the UK will experience welcome warm weather, the outlook is more mixed for other parts of the country. Brits along the east coast are more likely to experience chillier winds, while millions in the south west of England will be caught up in deluges throughout the day.

Today’s weather is similar to that of Wednesday, which was the warmest day of the year so far with a maximum temperature of 22.1C being reached in Santon Downham in Suffolk. But thunderstorms were forecast to roll across the country in the evening.

The outlook for Friday to Sunday remains in keeping with the rest of this week with a mixed picture emerging across the British Isles. According to the Met Office Scotland will have some of the warmest conditions. “Some warm sunshine in the far south and across northern Scotland on Friday,” it said. “Elsewhere cloudy with rain, perhaps thundery. Remaining unsettled thereafter. Rain at times, though some warm sunshine too.

Deakin encouraged people to stay up to date with the weather due to the mixed conditions, but to expect rain in some parts of the country. He did inject some confidence with his forecast as in many areas in the UK will feel warm when the sun is out due to it being May and also because of the burst of air is coming up from the south west of Europe.
