Thousands of customers were unable to access their accounts on payday due to technical difficulties affecting several banking apps.
HSBC, Nationwide, Barclays, and Virgin Money reported issues on the last working day of the month, a typical payday.
Both HSBC and Virgin Money experienced problems with their mobile banking apps, which have largely been resolved after several hours. However, all the banks are still facing issues with the “faster payment system,” resulting in delayed salary payments and customers unable to pay their bills.
HSBC’s issues began around 8:20 AM, with over 7,000 outage reports on Downdetector. Users were unable to access the mobile banking app, which displayed a message stating that services were “unavailable.”
An HSBC spokesman said: “Customers sending payments online, by app, or on the phone may experience slow responses or failure notices.
“We advise them to check with the recipient or view their recent transactions in the mobile app via the notifications icon before attempting to send the payment again.
“We’re really sorry to those impacted and are working hard to fully resolve the issue.
“We’ll continue to share the latest information and guidance for our customers via our social channels.”
