(ANSA) – ROME, SEP 2 – Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister
Antonio Tajani said Saturday that the European Union must reform
itself and, at the same time, not allow its agenda to be set by
a small number of influential states.
“Europe must not be driven by two or three countries,” Tajani
said at the annual Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio.
“All the (necessary) reforms must be done.
“We must reform the Stability Pact, conclude the banking union
and harmonize our tax systems”.
He also called for an industrial policy to be adopted at the EU
level.
“If we want to count in the world, we must have a weight which
goes beyond that of the high representative or of ministers,” he
said.
“In order to count in the world, Europe must have economic
strength, not just trade strength, it must be able to count at
the industrial level’.
He added that “Europe must take some steps forward” on the
defence front.
“We have to be more ambitious but the (military) numbers we have
do not allow it,” he said. (ANSA).
