River Tyne bursts banks again leaving Newcastle Quayside flooded during high tide

Two car parks on the Quayside were closed today after a second day of flooding as a result of the River Tyne bursting its banks.

The Tyne is said to be “overtopping”, as an extremely high tide has spilled over onto car parks close to the Swing Bridge. On Friday, the Watergate and Quayside West car parks were closed as a precaution, though some cars were still seen parked there.

Teams from Newcastle City Council have been on site, along with the Environment Agency, to monitor the river levels, with the aim of keeping the area safe and protecting the public.

On Twitter this afternoon, Newcastle City Council posted: “Following yesterday’s overtopping of the Tyne at the Quayside the Watergate and Quayside West car parks on either side of the swing bridge have been closed for the rest of the day for access and public safety reasons. Our flood resilience team and the Environment Agency will continue to monitor the situation over the next 24 hours and stand ready to act if flooding reoccurs.

“We would like to thank the public for their cooperation.”
