Customers of four banking firms will once again be able to access a counter service in their high street starting this week.
Oakham’s new banking hub opens on Friday (April 12) with a Post Office run service enabling people to carry out regular cash transactions.
The desk will be open Monday to Thursday from 9am until 5pm.
In addition, community bankers from each firm will take turns to work on rotation, each offering face-to-face advice on more complicated banking issues.
Mondays will be covered by someone from Barclays, Tuesdays by NatWest, Wednesdays by Santander and Thursdays by Lloyds. HSBC will join the rota on Fridays from June 21.
The service has been introduced by Cash Access UK following the closure of Oakham’s individual banks.
Chief executive officer Gareth Oakley said: “It’s a positive development for local residents and businesses and will make a great difference to Oakham’s high street.”
Rutland MP Alicia Kearns will open the hub at 11am on Friday in the former Lloyds building in Hugh Street. She said: “Oakham’s new banking hub is fantastic news for our community and for all those who rely on cash and face-to-face banking.
“This new community asset will offer improved access to banking locally, with five different banks operating from the same site, outstripping the banking provision in most local towns.
“It will be an honour to officially open the hub and see this wonderful service up and running”
A spokesman for Oakham Town Council added: “Our residents and businesses rely on access to cash and we are pleased to support and promote this addition to our community.”
Cash Access UK is a not-for-profit company established by nine banks and building societies. By the end of this year it will have opened more than 100 banking hubs across the country.
