Worker trapped in Slikyara tunnel tells family he is ‘Safe and healthy’ even as rescue operations continue

As Wednesday marked day 11 of the operation to rescue 41 workers trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district, the officials are ‘hopeful’ to rescue the victims at the earliest. The collapse occurred on November 12 during the construction of the tunnel from Silkyara to Barkot, and the debris that fell in a 60-metre stretch on the Silkyara side of the tunnel trapped 41 workers. A National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) official said that on November 12, the tunnel caved in and that the other Barkot side of the tunnel was already closed, as work on that side had not yet started.

The seized properties include 23 immovable properties of Farmax India Limited, its MD Morthala Srinivasa Reddy and his brother M. Malla Reddy (Executive Director in Farmax India Ltd). The seized properties also include equity shares of M/s Farmax India Limited in the name of promoters and the shares of MSR India originally held by Morthala Srinivasa Reddy and later transferred to his brother and other family members, according to ED officials.

Russia said Wednesday it had destroyed four Ukrainian naval drones approaching Crimea in the Black Sea and downed three aerial unmanned vehicles over the annexed peninsula. Ukraine has aimed to increase pressure on Russian forces in the Black Sea by launching drone and missile attacks on military installations in and around the peninsula. “Four unmanned Ukrainian Navy vessels were detected in the western part of the Black Sea heading towards the Crimean peninsula,” the defence ministry said in a statement.

Leading South Korean feed maker Nonghyup Feed Inc. (NOFI) has issued an international tender to purchase up to 65,000 metric tons of animal feed wheat, European traders said on Wednesday. The deadline for submission of price offers in the tender is also Wednesday, Nov. 22. The wheat is sought for arrival in South Korea in April 2024in one consignment. NOFI has also issued a separate tender to buy 138,000 tons of animal feed corn.

Given the increasing importance of NBFCs, the increasing interconnectivity between banks and non-banks merits close attention. NBFCs are large net borrowers of funds with exposure from banks being the highest. Such concentrated linkages may create contagion risks. Banks must constantly evaluate their exposure to NBFCs and exposure of individual NBFCs to multiple banks. NBFCs should focus on broad basing funding sources and reducing over dependance on banks for funding, says RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das.
