Met Office verdict on UK August bank holiday heatwave

The Met Office has given another indication that summer might return to Devon in time for the bank holiday weekend. The region is enjoying a settled spell of weather following a washout July.

Although it isn’t as sunny as we’d like, temperatures have risen to the mid 20s in recent days. And many will already be making plans for the three-day weekend at the end of August with the summer bank holiday.

It’s the last one before Christmas this year, so what does the Met Office say is in store for us over the next fortnight or so?

Well, so far it’s looking promising with the chance of some ‘very warm or even hot conditions’ possible. The forecast from August 22 says: “This period will likely begin rather changeable, with breezy conditions and a mixture of sunshine and showers, possibly heavy at times in the north and northwest, and drier, sunnier, and fairly warm weather in the south and southeast of the country.

“There remains a chance that very warm or even hot conditions, perhaps accompanied with some thunderstorms, may extend north from continental Europe for a time through the middle of next week, mostly likely just into southern areas of the UK, though the risk of very hot conditions developing currently looks very slim.

“The remainder of August looks predominantly rather changeable, with the wettest weather more likely in northern areas and temperatures generally close to or a little above average.”
