Martin Lewis issues ‘check now’ warning as 1 million people could get £1,000 added to bank account

Martin Lewis says 1 million people in the UK could potentially claim THOUSANDS back from the Student Loans Company. ITV regular Mr Lewis explained all in a Twitter video on the site, which is now called X, on Monday October 16, with figures showing 800,000 people have overpaid their loans.

“Are you still paying off your student loan? Our FOI shows over 1m people overpaid last year and can claim £100s or £1,00s back. I’ve recorded this video briefing to talk you through who’s due money and how to do it… Please share with anyone impacted,” Mr Lewis said in the caption.

In reply, fans began to reveal their own stories. Waiki said: “One of the few times I actually listen to Martin Lewis, turns out I’m due a refund.” John Shakespeare said: “Just reclaimed £700. Brilliant advice, thanks” And Jake typed: “IVE OVER PAID BY £74.39 IM WAITING FOR A REFUND YIPEE.”

“Try and do your research,” Mr Lewis said. “Don’t just do it speculatively – there’s no time limit here.” Harry replied on Twitter: “This happened to me about 8 years ago but the SLC told me I wasn’t able to claim any of it back… I assume now I’ve repaid my loan that I can’t do this?”

Mr Lewis said: “No because you havent overpaid. But you should’ve been able to then, unless you voluntarily overpaid” Claire told him: “Student Loan Company charges interest on loans but seems not to want to pay interest on any sums it might continue to extract from accounts even after full loan repaid”

“I’ve overpaid every single year!! I don’t know how they always take alot more than they should. I have a refund of just shy of £600 a few months ago!! I’ve already overpaid this year too,” Bella fumed. MB said: “The real scam is the amount of interest that is currently put on the student loans in the UK. It was not marketed as such when I first applied at 18.”

“I’ve paid mine off but I know for a fact there were instances where I paid a lot more when I received a bonus etc. I’m assuming trying to reclaim those just means I would have additional outstanding balance, because the overpayment has just been taken from my overall balance?” James asked.
