One Londoner was shocked to wake up and find that over £100,000 was randomly sitting in his bank account.

Urslaan Khan, 41, couldn’t believe it when he saw the sum of £122,000 in his Gatehouse Bank account last week. Particularly as his account only had £1 sitting in it the day before reports Bristol Live.

Urslaan, an admin assistant from Poplar in East London, said that he had simply set up a standing order which was going to transfer £200 from his current account into his savings account. However, Urslaan didn’t have the cash in his account for this to happen at the time.

When money did come into Urslaan’s account for the transfer to be granted, he checked his balance to find the large sum of cash. Urslaan was confused by the cash pot and was surprised when he was even allowed to transfer the sum from his Gatehouse account to his Barclays Bank account.

Upon discovering the money, Urslaan immediately reported it to Gatehouse Bank who Urslaan claims told him that he was allowed to keep the money. He said: “I was put on hold three times – only to be assured that there was nothing to worry about.”

However, Urslaan was not able to be delighted for too long as the bank realised its mistake a day later and asked him to return the money. The admin assistant did send the money back on October 2 after speaking to the bank adding: “I’d be set up for life if I had kept it.”

Urslaan believes the money was intended for another customer who has at least two accounts with the bank. He said: “By the looks of it, this person must have two accounts – account A and B. The bank should have taken money from A and put it in B. But somewhere along the line it’s ended up in my account – account Z!”
