Lloyds in Swindon Old Town among latest bank closures

Lloyds Bank in Old Town’s High Street will close its doors to Swindon customers permanently on Monday, February 3, 2025 as part of the bank’s latest round of closures.

“Before we close any branch, we look at how our customers are managing their money and using the branch,” explained a spokesperson for Lloyds.

“Most customers are now using our Mobile Banking app, Internet Banking or calling us instead.

“This means they are using branches, including our Swindon Old Town branch much less. Because of this, we’ll be closing our Swindon branch.”

Once closed, the nearest available Lloyds branch for Old Town residents will be on Regent Street in Swindon, followed by Castle Street in Cirencester.

The move comes just four months after it was announced that Lloyds in Marlborough, the town’s last High Street bank, would also be closing.

Locals and councillors in Wiltshire towns such as Marlborough and Royal Wootton Bassett have since pushed for town banking hubs to replace the loss.

From 2019 to 2024, Lloyds noted a 52 per cent drop in total transactions at the counter or immediate deposit machine (IDM) for personal customers.

For its business customers, the bank has seen a 50 per cent drop, according to data released by Lloyds.

In terms of cashpoint transactions, the bank has also seen a decrease, dropping 35 per cent from 2019 to 2024 for personal customers.
