Latest Met Office predictions for the UK bank holidays as schools break up


With schools across England and Wales set to break up for the Easter holiday tomorrow (31 March), thoughts inevitably turn to what kind of weather is in store.

The Met Office has a yellow weather warning in place for wind and rain from 9pm tonight until 6pm tomorrow for parts of England and Wales.

Here is what we know for conditions further ahead.

What are the dates for Easter Sunday and the bank holidays?

In England and Wales, most schools return on Monday 17 April.

In Scotland, most schools break on 31 March returning on 17 April.

Meanwhile, in Northern Ireland, the Easter break for most schools runs from 6-14 April.

This year, Easter Sunday falls on 9 April.

Good Friday will be on Friday 7 April, marking a bank holiday across the UK.

Easter Monday, also a bank holiday, is on 10 April, completing a four-day weekend for people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Although it is not actually a nationwide bank holiday in Scotland, some councils including Edinburgh, Falkirk and Dundee claim it as one.

What will the weather be like for Easter break?

On Saturday ,western areas can expect more rain as well as cloudy and cooler conditions. But Sunday will be drier with more sunshine.

Monday 3 April –Wednesday 12 April

According to the Met Office’s long-range forecast, initially there are likely to be showers or longer spells of rain.

Heavy rain is forecast for Easter Sunday and while there may be drier and brighter spells in western areas, which will give way to rain coming from the west. Meanwhile, expect mist on the eastern coasts.

There is some good news with the latter part of this period expected to be more settled, although rain is likely to be in the mix for the south and west of the country. There may also be strong winds, but thankfully temperatures are likely to remain close to average.

Parts of the north and east where there are clear skies could experience frost.

Thursday 13 April – Thursday 27 April

There is likely to be a north/south divide when it comes to the weather during this period.

The south is expected to have some unsettled weather while higher pressure to the north is forecast to bring drier weather to this region.

Conditions across the country are likely to be drier than in March, although there is a chance of some cooler weather in the north and east and some overnight frosts.

Where are the yellow weather warnings?

The Met Office has one in place for wind for southern and south west parts of England as well as parts of south Wales. This is in place from 9pm today until midday tomorrow.

Another yellow weather warning for wind is in place tomorrow from 6am until 6pm for the same parts. A warning for rain for areas in the south west has been issued for the same period.
