Intense heatwave strikes Europe this week but Britain misses out


An “intense and long-lasting” heatwave is set to hit Europe across the bank holiday weekend, however the UK will miss out on very hot temperatures.

Britain is expected to see a showery northerly flow, with some sunny spells to bring warmth.


Weather experts suggest that Southern England will feel the warmest temperatures with highs of 28 or 29C.

While the majority of the UK looks set to see high teens and low 20Cs.

Sunny conditions are predicted to remain across the UK until Wednesday when low pressure arrives from the Atlantic.

Cooler and fresher air is set to reach the UK by Thursday, bringing showery outbreaks of rain across the August Bank Holiday.

In France, weather warnings are in place for this week where temperatures in the south and east have already reached highs of 40C.

There are other warnings of high temperatures in Switzerland, Germany, Poland, Italy, Croatia, Greece, Hungary Austria and Lithuania.

Spain announced a heatwave on Sunday which will last through until at least Thursday.

Both Spain and France should see some relief from the worst of the heat by the weekend.

A spokesperson for Meteo France said: “A lasting and intense heat wave for the period has settled over the country.

“The heat wave peak is expected around Wednesday (and temperatures may still remain very hot on Thursday).

“Some absolute records are likely to be broken, especially Tuesday and Wednesday towards the Rhone Valley, with 40 to 42 degrees expected.”

In the UK, rainfall over the next few days will mostly be from showery outbreaks from the west until low pressure moves through on Wednesday and Thursday with frontal rain.

A shift on Friday will bring a showery cooler flow for Friday night and the start of the weekend.
