Armed with advanced knowledge and expertise, Gitau embarked on a remarkable professional journey upon his return to Kenya.
He began his career at Triad Architects in Nairobi, contributing to architectural design and contract management projects from 1984 to 1989.
Then, from 1989 to 1994, he moved on to Mehraz Ehesani Architects, which further solidified his reputation as a skilled architect in Kenya.

In 1995, Gitau co-founded Aaki Consultants, Architects, and Urban Designers, a firm that would become a cornerstone of his career.
As the principal partner, he oversaw firm management, project management, design, and supervision, establishing Aaki Consultants as a leading name in the industry.
His leadership and vision were instrumental in shaping the firm’s success over nearly three decades.
Francis Gitau Mungai’s legacy in Architecture
Beyond his architectural endeavours, Gitau was a respected figure in various professional organisations.
He was a fellow of the Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) and held several key positions, including Chairman of the AAK from 2003 to 2005.
His leadership extended to the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA), where he served as Director and chairman of the Building and Infrastructure Board, advocating for the integration of private sector interests in government policies.
Francis Gitau Mungai’s legacy in other professions
Gitau’s influence reached far beyond architecture and professional associations. He was a pivotal figure in the real estate sector as president of Dereshe Investments, focusing on real estate and property letting in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, since 2017.
His entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen were evident in his role as Chairman of the Board of Directors at the National Housing Corporation (NHC) from 2016 to 2018, where he oversaw housing programs across Kenya.
His contributions to academia were equally noteworthy. For nearly three decades, Gitau served as a senior lecturer at the University of Nairobi’s Department of Architecture and Building Sciences, imparting knowledge and inspiring future architects.
Gitau’s legacy also includes his significant role at Family Bank Ltd, where he served as a director from 2017 until his passing.
As chairman of the Credit Committee, Chairman of the IT and Projects Committee, and a member of the HR Committee, he played a crucial role in steering the bank towards growth and innovation.
He died as the newly appointed chairman of the board of directors at Family Bank.
